Independent Study Plan

Question: To What Extent Does The Representation Of Alexandra Burke In The Music Video For ‘Bad Boys’ Conform To Dominant Stereotypes Of Race & Gender?

Areas Of Discussion:

  • Laura Mulvey – Male Gaze & Impact on Male & Female Audiences.
  • Represented As Independent/Powerful – Alexandra Burke – Is She Also A Bad Girl?
  • Bell Hooks – Black Masculinity
  • Stanley Crouch
  • Sexual Objectification Of Alexandra
  • Semiotics – How Signs & Shots Convey Meaning.

Questions That I Could Use On My Independant Study..

1)  Is the urban representation of Alexandra Burke giving her a competative edge against Leona Lewis or is it just another stereotypical image which associates with the common view that ‘ sex sells’ ?

2)  How has the need to become comercially successful affected the ‘good girl’  image  Alexandra portrayed during her procss in the X-factor and in the video of her debut single ‘Hallelujah’?

3) Does the image represented in the ‘Bad Boys’ video fully emphase the fact that women are being promoted in a form which satisfies the needs of  only the male audiences?

Independent Study

I’m planning to do my indepndant study on  Alexandra Burke’s latest single ‘Bad Boys’. Using Laura Mulvey’s work on ‘Femininism’, i plan to analyse the representation of black women in urban music videos. Whether Her view of ‘The Male Gaze’ has been brought to affect in the making of the video and therefore been associated with the camera, or whether is the fact that in modern commercial media we have become too familiar with the fact that ‘sex sells’. I could also compare the way Alexandra’s image is portrayed with another black solo female artist who has won the X-Factor and see how her representaion differs from Leona Lewis.
